Can I use my Xbox 360 S hard drive on my friends Xbox with a data transfer cable?

I have the new Xbox 360 console and still have the data transfer cable. I'm going round to my Friend's house and he has the old Xbox console. Can I load up my profile and saves Using my hard drive?
