Can you plug a laptop into a laptop to use as data storage?

I have a laptop which has died on me, the motherboard has gone, and now I'm wondering if I can get the information stored on the 'dead' on by plugging it into a new one. Is it simple enough, what types of cables do I need? Help anyone??
